The aim of the invention is to provide a simple quantitative test for the presence of protein kinase C inhibitors. This aim is achieved by means of a DNA construct which contains at least one reporter gene and a control region for the activation of a particularly strongly induced gene of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The protein kinase C inhibitor and a tumour promotor act on EBV-containing cells containing the DNA construct, and the amount of reporter gene product obtained is then determined quantitatively.
