The hand grip is for an upwardly open, generally rectangular, portable plastic container, of the stackable and nestable type, with at least one grin opening (11) near an upper edge (12). At least one cross side wall (13) of the container has a cavity (14) above the grip opening (11). A grip insert can be secured in the cavity (14) to form a closed container grip. The cavity (14) has an upwardly open U-profile, and its length is approximately the same as that of the grip opening. Its face sides (15,15') each have an opening (16). The grip insert forms a flat strip corresp. to the shape of the open side of the cavity (14), with right-angled hooks formed at its ends, high secure in the opening (16).
