The microbiological degradation of organic pollutants is generally substantially inhibited by high concentrations of bioavailable heavy metals. According to the invention, in a two-stage process, this inhibition is abolished by the admixture of a fine-grained adsorbent to moist soil or building rubble. The irreversible binding of the heavy metals thus entered into no longer permits these to be bioavailable. The process can be used for the rehabilitation of material contaminated by heavy metals and hydrocarbons in such a manner that harmless filler material can be produced.
