A refractory-lined metallurgical vessel has a thin inner shell (3) on the outer periphery of the refractory lining (1) and a space (4) is provided between the inner shell (3) and the vessel casing (2) before heating of the vessel. A heat insulating layer may be provided between the inner shell (3) and the vessel casing (2). Spaced inserts, such as battens, rings or spirals, may be located on the outer face of the inner shell (3) to form channels for passage of a coolant. The inner shell (3) may be applied to only part of the lining (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. as a metallurgical vessel operating at an internal temp. of 2000 deg.C or more, e.g. the hearth region of a blast furnace. Thermal expansion stresses in the lining and the casing are limited in a reliable manner and the casing thickness can be reduced without exceeding permissible stress values.
