The pump has a leakage chamber (10) which is vented by an opening (11) for those quantities of fluid which emerge from the pump chamber (9) as a result of inadequate sealing on the shaft (8). A lead-off channel (12) runs from the leakage chamber to the suction side (14) of the pump. The lead-off channel opens into a balancing container (26) which is intermittently subject to negative pressure. The container is simultaneously a part of the fluid circuit containing the pump (20). USE/ADVANTAGE - Coolant pump for vehicle IC engine reduces leakage losses arising during prolonged operating periods.
