The vehicle transmission control method involves controlling a link between a throttle pedal and a throttle valve which controls an effective gear ratio. The throttle pedal setting ( beta ), and its rate of change (d beta /dt), control a computer program which generates control signals for fuel saving performance, irrespective of the actual rates of change of the control. Sensors monitor the throttle control position as well as that of the throttle valve and the engine parameters. The effective idling setting is calculated from the combined torque of the auxiliary equipment and from the engine parameters. The transmission is infinitely variable, or is variable in small steps. ADVANTAGE - Cost saving operation of vehicle. Less driver skill required.
