An automatic transmission control unit (10) and an auxiliary controller (20) are addressed with throttle opening (TVO) and road speed (V) signals from respective sensors (2,3). The auxiliary controller (20) receives inputs denoting type of fuel (F), engine coolant and transmission fluid temps. (TF,TO), and a passenger and luggage wts. (W). Air and surface resistances, gradient etc. are taken into account in the selection (SEL) of the best gear ratio by actuation of various valves (11), with provision for an overdrive locking mode. ADVANTAGE - Driving conditions can be established accurately and an improved choice of gear ratio can be adapted to any vehicle.
