A process and appts. are claimed to continually wash contaminated granular substances, the novelty is that the coarse fraction of grains in the range 10 to 80 mm are separated from the other fractions and washed using water which has previously been used for washing and subsequently treated and cleaned. The appts. pref. passes water (3) through a washer (1) which receives the substrate for treatment (2). Coarse grains are passed (5) via a sieve (7) with a water inlet (10) and a coarse fraction outlet (11). ADVANTAGE - The process and assembly facilitate a continuous process esp. for the removal of hydrocarbon impurities within a closed system yet minimising concentrations of contaminated substances, using relatively simple equipment.
