To apply a coating layer to a flat textile body, esp. a carpet tile, the tile (P) is within a mould (F) open at the bottom for immersion into a layer of coating mass (34). The viscosity of the coating mass (34) is structured to penetrate the tile (P) by a given depth. Also claimed is an assembly with moulds (F) with a base and side walls each for at least one tile (P). A coating section (S2) immerses the free side of the tile (P) into a coating mass (34), to be fixed in a treatment zone (S3). The coated tile (P) is removed from the mould (F) at a clearing station (S4). Pref. at least one reinforcement layer (42, 44) is applied to the coating mass (34) during its liquid phase as fibres or fibre sections through woven or other materials, non-wovens or separate yarns. The tile (P) is heated before coating. The mould (F) has ventilation openings in the base. The moulds (F), with tiles (P), are coated continuously and in succession. After the coating mass has set the tiles (P) are separated from each other and/or hemmed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is for the application of a coating mass to one side of a textile flat body, esp. carpet tiles. The system gives a cost-effective coating operation, allowing for a number of tile formats, which can be processed in small batches and which requires only a small mfg. assembly.
