Stabilisation of organic pollutant deposits in soil - by controlled addn. of nutrients or microorganisms to surrounding soil

Stabilisation of compact deposits of organic pollutants, where the deposits are completely surrounded by natural or deposited soil, is effected by: (a) adding nutrients to activate naturally occurring microorganisms in the surrounding soil, or adding externally cultivated microbial cultures capable of degrading pollutants diffusing from the deposits into the surrounding soil; (b) continuously monitoring the activity of the microorganisms and the concn. of diffusing pollutants in the surrounding soil; and (c) adding more microorganisms or nutrients as and when required, is determined by the monitoring step. ADVANTAGE - Migration of pollutants, e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or mineral oil hydrocarbons, from localised deposits may be controlled automatically with the minimum of constructional work.
