A mixing and shear roller pair for plastic materials has two temperature controlled rollers with sharp edged grooves and lands rotating in opposite directions at the same or different speeds. The helix angle of the grooves increases continuously from about 30 deg. at the material input end to about 45 deg. at the output end and the rolls are mirror images of each other. In addition there are esp. equispaced, longitudinal grooves running axially along the roll surfaces (4, 5). The rolls have independent temperature control. One roll has a zone at the input end running for about 2/3 of the roll length and the other roll has a zone at the input end of about 1.3 of the roll length. On each roll there is a second zone for the remainder of the roll length. USE/ADVANTAGE - For mixing materials of greatly differing viscosity. Produces controlled shear forces which improve mixing while avoiding material damage.
