A control unit (30) controls the variable valve timing mechanism (15) in accordance with an engine speed in at least one charge area in which the mechanical charger (5) is ready to operate, feeding charging air into the cylinder (a), so that the closure time point of the inlet valve (14) is operable between an early or advanced time point and a late or delayed time point. A support device (11,12,21-23,24-26,28) causes a dynamic charge effect in the air inlet channel (3), when the closure time point of the inlet valve (14) is at the late point, whereby the mechanical charger (5) is supported in this engine operating range.
