Characters in a printing process are defined in terms of elements for which the contour lines are defined by a series of key points. These are stored in memory (13) and associated with the data are a number of weighting factors that define different line thicknesses. An input terminal (11) allows the character and weighting of the contour lines to be selected. The system computer allows the coordinate data to be generated for the selected form. By combining the selected elements characters with differences in line thickness can be produced. ADVANTAGE - Simplifies different character line thickness representations for print characters, using single data word.
