The insert is of flat lozenge shape and is clamped with one flat face against a radially outward oriented seating face (24) of the cutter body (50), and one of the four side faces supported against an abutment face (54) pointing in the direction of motion. The side faces (30,32) therefore form the rake faces of the insert and the intersection of a side face with one or other of the two flat faces forms one of the four main cutting edges (26,28).The side faces (30,32) are produced with a convex curvature that causes the radial rake angle to vary from a positive value of 10 to 20 deg. at the cutting end to zero at the base end.
