The invention relates to an apparatus for determining the biochemical oxygen demand and the toxicity, particularly of waste water, having a reaction container 1 comprising a reaction space 11 for receiving a liquid sample, an electrolyser 2 having electrodes 14, 19, an absorber 6 which can be placed in the reaction container and a control and measured value processing device which can be connected to the electrolyser 2. The electrolyser 2 has chambers which are connected in terms of flow and which each have an electrode 14 or 17. The free chamber gas spaces 2.3, 9.1 can be separated from one another by an electrolysis liquid.
