The invention relates to an antigenic gp300 protein characterised by: - a molecular weight MW of about 300 Kd, - the association of two units of a glycoprotein gp140, a precursor especially of the envelope glycoprotein gp125 encoded by the env gene of the genome of a human retrovirus HIV-2 capable of causing LAS or AIDS or the protein of a retrovirus which exhibits immunological cross-reactivity with antibodies directed against the said gp300 protein of the retrovirus HIV-2. The invention also relates to the preparation of these proteins, to monoclonal antibodies directed against them and to immunogenic compositions containing them.
