The segmentation method processes a source image by: - characterisation of the texture by calculation of attribute vectors with I components associated with several values of analysis resolution; - selection of a discriminating attribute vector with J components by measuring the non-correlation of the texture attributes, by using the modelling of sample zones of K textures, performed in parallel with the characterisation in a processing phase 1'; - classification of the image into K texture classes, for each analysis resolution, based on the modelling of the sample zones and by calculating a confidence criterion associated with the classifications performed; - multi-resolution merging of the partitions obtained on the basis of an analysis using the confidence criterion. On completion of this step, the source image is segmented into K regions. The invention applies, in particular, to the segmentation of aerial images, visible or infrared. IMAGE
