The nuclear reactor comprises a device for recovering and cooling the molten core consisting of a metal structure (5) resting on the bottom (2a) of the vessel well (2) and immersed in a mass of water filling the lower part of the vessel well. The metal structure (5) consists of a plurality of elongate hollow beam members which have a V-shaped cross section and are placed parallel in relation to one another with a certain side spacing, in at least two superposed horizontal sheets (9a, 9b, 9c... 9f). The V-shaped cross sections of the beam members are splayed and open upwards and the outer edges of the sloping faces of the beam members (7) arranged quincuncially following the superposed layers overlap laterally. The beam members (7) are attached to vertical hollow columns (8). IMAGE
