SCHUTOSOME GLUTATHIONE PEROXIDASE: GENE CLONING, PEPTIDE SEQUENCE, AND APPLICATIONS.

New nucleic acid fragment (I) contains a sequence encoding Schistosome glutathione peroxidase (GPO) or part of it. Also new are (1) nucleic acid fragments of over 106p which hybridise specifically with (I); (2) recombinant vectors contg. the new nucleic acid; (3) transformed eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells contg. these vectors; (4) a 169 amino acid polypeptide (II) having the sequence of Schistosome GPO and (5) fragments of (II) contg. at least 5 consecutive amino acids of (II). The specification includes the sequence of (I) for Schistosoma mansoni GPO. USE - (II), and their fragments, are immunogenic and are used (a) as diagnostic reagents and (b) in prepn. of vaccines. To increase the effectiveness of the vaccines these pref. also contain other antioxidant enzymes of Schistosomes (or their fragments), esp. 28 or 26 kD glutathione-S-transferase.
