The prosthesis has a U-shaped femoral component (1), cooperating with a tibial plate (12) by means of intermediate components which engage a pair of condylar surfaces (5,6) of the femoral component. The tibial plate is formed by a pair of sub-plates mounted about an axis (19) for relative rotation. A first sub-plate (16) is secured to the tibia, and a second sub-plate (17) attached to it facing the femur. Two plates (30) are mounted for limited translational sliding movement relative to the second sub-plate, each including a rotational sliding surface (34,35) which engages the respective condylar surface of the femoral component. ADVANTAGE - Simplified construction with closer approximation to movements of natural knee joint.
