The automatic pool cleaning machine (10) has cleaning drums (11), drive rollers and a controller for the drive rollers. The control procedure commences by memorising a sequence of displacements to be performed by the cleaner according to a predetermined schedule. The cleaning machine is then directed according to the stored schedule. A detector continuously watches for emergence of the machine from the water. The control schedule is then overridden till the machine returns itself to the water, when the schedule is resumed. ADVANTAGE - Ensures cleaning machine returns to pool automatically and continues cleaning schedule.
