A silicone elastomer compsn. crosslinked by a catalyst of Gp. VIIIB, esp. Pt, or of Gp. IVA, esp. Sn or other analogues, contains a Ag cpd., and has shore hardness at least 10 (at least 20). Pref. the Ag cpd. is protected, encased of encapsulated, esp. in a hydrocolloid and/or a salt and/or a synthetic polymer. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prolonged treatment of water involves use of the compsn. (claimed). The water is contaminated with microorganisms, e.g. bacteria, fungi, moulds, yeasts and algae. Liberation of Ag biocides into an aq. medium is up to at least 80%, and is slow, reproducible and controlled, lasting at least 6 months. The compsn. has good mechanical properties, esp. hardness and tear resistance. The Ag cpd. is in a form in which it does not affect crosslinking of the silicone.
