Preparing articles moulded from polyester compsns. for finish coating - by applying a liq. epoxy primer compsn. to fill porosity and surface defects

The surface of articles moulded from polyester moulding compsns. is prepared for subsequent finish coating by applying a layer of an epoxy resin based compsn. to fill surface porosity, craters and other surface defects without using filling putty or rubbing down with sandpaper. Pref. the unfinished polyester mouldings are degreased e.g. in an alkaline wash, rinsed in tap water and deionised water, dried in an oven at 100-160 deg. C and cooled 20-90 deg. C prior to the claimed finishing treatment. The epoxy filler compsn. is e.g. 'EUROXY' (RTM BSAF two component epoxy compsn.). A suitable conductive primer comspn. is '3035113' (RTM Societe AKZO). The primer coated articles are pref. dried and cured in an oven or drying tunnel at 80-160 deg. C for 20-30 mins. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process rectifies porosity, cratering and other surface defects of injection moulded, compression moulded and laminated articles made of polyester and other thermosetting resin compsns. and prepares them for subsequent finish coating. The finishing process improves the appearance of articles moulded from polyester composite materials. No mechanical finishing operations are required.
