A method for evaluating the flatness of strip (9) by the quantitative determination of a ht representative of the flatness of a portion of the strip (9) following its length comprises: (a) a traction is exerted on a portion of the strip (9); (b) the distance of a median line (13) on this portion of the strip (9) essentially equidistant from the lateral edges (16,17) of the strip from a reference plane (2) parallel to the portion of the strip (9) is determined; (c) the distances of two lateral lines (14,15) on the portion of the strip (9) situated either side of the median line (13) from the reference plane (2) are determined; and (d) the difference between the distance of the median line (13) from the reference plane (2) and the average of the distances from the lateral lines (14,15) to the reference plane (2) are calculated as the ht representing the flatness of the strip. The device used to implement this method of evaluating strip flatness is also claimed and comprises three measuring devices (6,7,8), using an optical triangulation technique, that are placed following a transverse line parallel to the strip (9) and connected to an electronic treatment system (12). Fabrication lines incorporating this device are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is used to evaluate the flatness of strip in a continuous rolling mill that may then be used to regulate the fabrication line. The method is readily automated and can be used to regulate the operation of strip fabrication lines. It can be applied to strip of varying widths in many rolling operations including those for the fabrication of tinplate, electrolytic plated strip, etc.
