The tool is applied against the work piece by a mechanism comprising a support (3), a tool carrier slide (4) mounted on the support so that it is able to move to-and-fro, and a system to balance the mass of the tool. The slide is formed by a mobile carriage mounted on rectilinear slides (5). A counter-weight (26) is fixed rigidly to the first arm (24) of a lever (10) mounted on the support so it can rotate in a plane of the motion of the carriage. The second arm (28) of the lever connected to the slide moves in translation perpendicular to its pivot axis.
