摘要
Process for inactivating viruses in a biological fluid, excluding therapeutic treatment processes, comprises mixing the fluid with a porphyrin deriv. and irradiating the mixt. at a wavelength of 600-900 nm. (I) is a cpd. of formula (IA) or (IB): R = H, vinyl, Et or 1-hydroxyethyl; R1 = H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-7C alkanoyl; R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl; X = CHO, CH2OR1 or CH=NR2. Also claimed is the use of (IA) or (IB) to prepare a photosensitising compsn. (II) for inactivating viruses, esp. enveloped viruses. The blood prods. are whole blood, plasma, serum or fluids from plasmapheresis. The wavelength is 620-800 nm. The light source is a laser, an arc lamp or an incandescent lamp. The concn. of (I) is 1-50 mg/l. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for inactivating viruses, esp. HIV and herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2), in blood prods. (claimed), as well as for extracorporeal blood treatment. Compsn. (II) is useful for extracorporeal blood treatment and local treatment of perpetic lesions (both claimed). In contrast to prior art hematoporphyrin derivs. (cf. US4878891), cpds. (I) have good absorption at wavelengths above 620 nm, thus avoiding haemoglobin shielding and heating effects, and give high yields of singlet oxygen.
