The bending of a long section such as a rail track is measured by a detector (10) that is mounted on a rigid beam (3) with rollers (4,5) at either end. The rollers run on the rail being measured. The detector has a rod (10a) projecting vertically downward and running on the top of the rail being measured. The displacement of the rod is translated to electrical signals that are displayed in numeric form by a processing unit (11) mounted on top of the beam. USE/ADVANTAGE- Fast measurement with improved accuracy in measuring straightness of long sections of rail track, particularly for track intended for use with high speed trains.
