The compass or dividers includes a leg 3a having a safety point 5 in the form of 2 shallow cone with a wide angle eg. 60 DEG - 120 DEG at the apex 5b, the base of the cone having a diameter of 3mm or more. The point is made from steel by turning or milling so that the apex is free from burning.
