NEW MATERIAL:A phthalonitrile-based compound shown by formula I (R is straight-chain or branched alkyl) R' is nonsubstituted or substituted aryl). EXAMPLE:3,6-Dioctyloxy-4,5-diphenylthiophthalonitrile. USE:Useful as an intermediate for color material. A thin film of phthalocyanine compound synthesized from this phthalocyanine-based compound has high reflectance and is usable as optoelectronics material such as optical recording medium, optical card, laser printer, near infrared absorbing filter, protecting safety goggles. PREPARATION:A 3,6-dialkoxy-4,5-dichlorophthalonitrile shown by formula II is reacted with a compound shown by formula III in the molar ratio of this compound to the compound shown by formula II of 1.5-4.0, preferably 1.8-2.5 in the presence of a base in a solvent such as dimethylformamide to give a compound shown by formula I.
