PURPOSE: To obtain the subject complex having high secondary and tertiary non-linear optical susceptibility, suitable as a material for non-linear optical element and capable of forming a thin film having highly controlled orientation because the complex is a chiral complex having molecular asymmetry. ;CONSTITUTION: This complex has a two-fold effective symmetry or a lower order symmetry and contains two substituted phthalocyaninate ions coordinated to each other interposing a rare earth metal (III) ion therebetween. The complex can be produced by forming a magnesium (II) complex of synthetic substituted phthalocyanine, separating and purifying a prescribed substituted phthalocyanine magnesium (II) complex, eliminating the magnesium (II) ion, converting the obtained substituted phthalocyaninate ion to a dilithium salt and reacting the salt with a rare earth metal (III) ion. The complex is easily converted to a radical-type compound by laser irradiation and returns to the neutral non-radical type compound by a basic substance and, accordingly, it is useful also as an optical recording medium.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
