PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a coupler for a silver halide- color photograph, especially magenta coupler at a low cost using a safe reagent in a short process by subjecting a specific compound to cyclization reaction. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 to R3 represent H or substituent) is cyclized in a water or alcoholic solvent at ambient temperature-100 deg.C for 30min-12hr preferably using 0.8-3.0 equivalents base such as sodium hydroxide or sodium methoxide to afford the objective compound expressed by formula II. The compound expressed by formula I can be obtained by reacting a compound expressed by formula III (Y represents acid radical; n is 0 or 1) with a nitroalkane compound expressed by the formula R3CH2NO2.
