PURPOSE:To perform accurate detection by detecting the sum of variable density data on picture elements on a line running on plural points in the vertical direction of lanes and detecting the center positions of the respective lanes, and detecting a band position from variable density data at the center position. CONSTITUTION:An X-ray film 3 where the base array of genes is photographed with X rays is placed on transparent glass 2. Bands 4 corresponding to four kinds of base codes whose array is determined are arranged and photographed on the X-ray film 3 by a shot-gun method. A linear image sensor 6 is provided facing the transparent glass 2. The sum of variable density data on picture elements passing plural points in the lane vertical direction is detected to detect the center position of each lane, and variable density data on picture elements at center positions of the respective detected lanes are collected to obtain the spectrum of each lane, thereby detecting plural maximal points as band positions from the spectrum.
