PURPOSE:To avoid the use of harmful ultravoilet, enlarge stokes shift and detect nucleic acid with high S/N and high sensitivity by using a nucleic acid dyeing agent including the effective component of a visible light exciting type coloring matter expressed by a specific equation and detecting a dyed two-chain nucleic acid with an optical means. CONSTITUTION:A nucleic acid dyeing agent including a compound expressed by a specific equation as an effective component is used, where the dotted circle indicates a complex ring, X is O S, Se or Te and is pirilium ring or pirilium analogous ring. R1 and R2 independently indicate hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, sulfonate radical, amino radical, styril radical, or substituted or unsubstituted low alkyl radical. R3 indicates -A, or -L-A, L for -L1-, -L2-L3- or -L4-L5-L6 and -L1 to L6 independently indicate -(CH=CH)-, divalent radical induced by substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical, substituted or unsubstituted low alkylene radical or -CH=R4-.
