PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new pyrylium salt as a visible light-excitation type pigment having a large Stokes shift and contained in a probe used to detect nucleic acid by an in situ hybridization. ;SOLUTION: This pyrylium satl is a 2-methyl-4,6-bis-(4-N,N- dimethylaminophenyl)pyrylium salt of the formula (X is O or S; Y^- is an anion of ClO₄ or I, etc.) or thiopyrylium salt, e.g. 2-methyl-4,6-bis-(4-N,N- dimethylaminophenyl)pyrylium iodide. The exemplified compound is obtained by adding p-dimethylaminoacetophenone to a mixed solution of acetic anhydride and concentrated sulfuric acid, heating and stirring to react, adding ethanol to the resultant reacted solution, then adding an aqueous solution of potassium iodide to separate a crude crystal and re-crystallizing the crystal with a mixed system of ethanol/ether.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
