POLARIZATION PLANE-MAINTAINING OPTICAL FIBER TYPE OPTICAL ISOLATOR

PURPOSE: To decrease the constituting parts of a polarization-independent type optical isolator so that the optical axis adjustment for the purpose of optical coupling is easily executed. ;CONSTITUTION: Ferrules 3a, 3b are inserted into fiber holders 4a, 4b provided with holes inclined at about 16° to the central axes of these fiber holders 4a, 4b and the ends of polarization plane-maintaining fiber 1a, 1b are obliquely ground to attain slopes inclining 45° to the central axis of the fiber holders 4a, 4b. Further, the fiber type polarized light selecting parts having multilayered dielectric films 7a, 7b formed are arranged on these slopes in the positions where these parts face each other. A Faraday rotor 5 and one or two pieces of lenses 6a, 6b are disposed therebetween. The rays emitted from the fiber type polarized light selecting parts parallel with the central axes of the fiber holders 4a, 4b, transmit the Faraday rotor 5 via the lenses 6a, 6b and are, thereafter, propagated to the polarization plane-maintaining fiber 1b on the opposite side.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
