PURPOSE: To trace the number of ambiguity components met during the decoding of a code and their positions by decoding a bit map picture space expression for a self-clocking symbol shape code. CONSTITUTION: All expressions obtained by filtering symbol codes almost in accordance with a formed spatial formating rule are spatially extracted as samples and the relative filter abutting strength values of respective symbol codes filtered by respective filters are obtained. The filter abutting strength values of all the filters are compared in each symbol, the shapes of symbols are sorted and decoded data are allocated to the shape-sorted symbols in accordance with data values previously allocated to respective symbols.
