PURPOSE:To obtain an org. compd. exhibiting nonlinear optical effect in a crystal state and to enable generation of second higher harmonic by using a compd. expressed by a specified general formula as nonlinear optical responding compd. CONSTITUTION:A compd. expressed by the formula I exhibits superior nonlinear optical effect in a crystal state as a nonlinear optical responding compd. to be used for a wavelength conversion element, optical bistable element, optical modulation element, phase conjugated optical element, etc. In the formula I, Ar is an aryl group; R is an H atom, alkyl group, or an aryl group; Z is an atomic group necessary for forming a 5- or 6-membered N-contg. heterocyclic ring. The org. compd. of this invention exhibits 18 times higher efficiency than urea when a powder sample 1 of an org. nonlinear optical material consisting of the org. compd. is irradiated with YAG laser and the second higher harmonic is measured with an evaluating device consisting of a cutting filter 2 for fundamental waves, spectroscope 3, photomultiplier 4, amplifier 5 and an oscilloscope.
