PURPOSE: To produce a cast slab having little scale on the surface layer with a compact apparatus by carrying the cast slab obtd. by solidifying with water cooling casting rolls while shielding from oxygen source in the specific surface temp. range. ;CONSTITUTION: The cast slab C continuously solidified by pouring molten steel L into gap between one pair of water cooling casting rolls 2a, 2b is shielded from the oxygen source in the temp. range of at least ≥800°C of the surface of the cast slab C. Concretely, the cast slab C is carried while closely interposing with endless metal-made shifting sheets 5 to forcedly shield the cast slab from the oxygen source. The reason of the cast slab C being shielded from the oxygen source in the temp. range of ≥800°C is extremely easy to be oxidized and the scale thickness on the surface layer is sharply increased in this temp. range, and thus, it is the most effectively to shield the cast slab from the oxygen source by arranging the shifting sheet 5 in this temp. range.
