PURPOSE:To obtain the subject high-purity sol excellent in homogeneity by adding aqueous H2O2 and an acid to a zirconium alkoxide or a solution thereof and hydrolyzing the alkoxide. CONSTITUTION:Water containing H2O2 in a molar amount of =2 times based on a zirconium alkoxide (e.g. zirconium methoxide) and an acid (e.g. nitric acid) in a molar amount of =0.2 based on the zirconium alkoxide are added to the zirconium alkoxide or a solution thereof in an organic solvent while being vigorously stirred to a carry out hydrolysis of the alkoxide and afford a white or transparent zirconia precursor sol. A stabilizer (e.g. yttria), as necessary, is added to the above-mentioned sol, aged or concentrated, then formed into a desired shape, dried and calcined to afford a zirconia formed body.
