PURPOSE: To provide a composition that can be administered for giving moisture to eyes or promoting lacrimation in the therapy for xerophthalmia or further provide a topical ophthalmic composition that is formulated so that the medicines are made sustained-release to the eyes continuously and comfortably. CONSTITUTION: This topical sustained-release ophthalmic composition comprises gelling polysaccharides and finely-divided drug carrier substrates. When the composition is applied as an eye drop, the polysaccharides gels to relatively increase the viscosity. This ophthalmic composition may further contain other drugs as betaxolol, apraclonidine, pilocarpine, toburamycin. Generally, the concentration of the gelling polysaccharide is about 0.1-3.0 w/v% and the finely divided drug carrier is about 0.05-3.0 w/v%. The gelling polysaccharide is, for example, carageenan or furcellaran, while the finely divided drug carrier is preferably an ion-exchange resin.
