PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled precursor, by treating a petroleum based pitch in a tubular heating reactor to provide a product containing mesophase pitch, then subjecting the product to aging treatment, separating and purifying the aged mesophase pitch layer by a difference of specific gravity. CONSTITUTION:Petroleum based pitch formed by thermal catalytic cracking of desulfurized and vacuum distilled light oil as a by-product is distilled under reduced pressure to provide a fraction of 80-85% cut, which is then heated at 380-500 deg.C in a tubular heating reactor. A nonoxidizing gas is injected into the tubular heating reactor to afford a product containing 5-15% mesophase pitch, which is subsequently subjected to aging treatment at 300-350 deg.C to clearly divide a nonmesophase pitch without containing mesophase pitch at all in the upper layer from a mesophase pitch layer by a difference of specific gravity, separate and purify the nonmesophase pitch. Thereby the nonmesophase pitch as a precursor for high-strength and ultrahigh-elastic modulus carbon fibers is obtained.
