PURPOSE: To determine the closest distance (separation) of an aerial from a tree accurately, quickly, and simply. ;CONSTITUTION: A distance to an object is determined in the period of time from a beam of pulse laser being cast onto the object till the reflected beam coming back. The reflected light by the inner surface of a collimator lens 17 is led to a photo-receiving element 15 to determine the outgoing timing, while the reflected light by the object is led also via the collimator lens 17 to the photo-receiving element 15 to determine the timing at which the reflected light comes back. The pulse waveform is differentiated to determine the timing of being incident into the photo-receiving element 15, and the timings at which the reflected light and emitted light are left incident into the photo-receiving element are determined strictly. The position of aerial is measured at three points, and the result is approximated by a second order function or cosh function, and thereby the closest distance from tree is determined.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
