METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PROCESSING OF AVERAGE OF PROTOTYPE IN HADWRITTEN CHARACTER RECOGNITION SYSTEM

PURPOSE: To provide an improved handwritten character recognition system, more specifically, to provide an improved procedure for matching the parametric expression of a recognized character to be averaged at the time of generating an averaged prototype character. CONSTITUTION: An elastic matching technique for improving the matching of the parametric expression of a recognized character to be averaged for providing an averaged prototype used in a handwritten character recognition system is provided. Point-to-point correspondence obtained from the elastic matching of two characters is obtained by using a back pointer at the time of the calculation of matching. A certain character is added to a prototype set when it is a new character, that is, it is not correctly recognized within a certain bounded value. When the character is correctly recognized, the character is averaged in the closest prototype in the class, and one new averaged prototype is provided.
