PURPOSE:To obtain a Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy-based oxide superconductor greatly improved in superconducting charactetistics, especially critical current density by carrying out the sintering treatment of powder of a Bi-based oxide superconductor containing a Bi2212 phase and a Bi2201 phase at a specific ratio expressed in terms of the X-ray intensity ratio. CONSTITUTION:This method for producing a Bi-based oxide superconductor is to carry out the sintering or heat treatment of powder or a layer of a Bi2Sr2 CaCu2Oy-based oxide superconductor containing a Bi2212 phase and a Bi2201 phase at 1/(0.3-2) ratio based on the X-ray intensity ratio of the former/latter. The powder of the Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy-based oxide superconductor at the content ratio can be formed by, e.g. mixing raw material compounds in a proportion so as to provide 2:2:1:2 molar ratio of Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu and performing the calcining treatment of the resultant mixture once or twice or more.
