PURPOSE: To obtain a high definition image by means of an inexpensive circuit of small power consumption, which is not necessary to drive image pickup elements and their peripheral circuits at high speed. ;CONSTITUTION: An optical path dividing optical element 20 optically divides an object image. Image signals corresponding to divided pictures outputted from the respective image pickup elements (CCD) 12 to 15 are given prescribed processings such as A/D conversion, and stored in slow memories 31 to 34. An image signal is read out from the slow memories 31 to 34, synthesized to be one picture of the image signal and stored in a fast memory 42. Operation until then is controlled by a first driving frequency f1 corresponding to a standard mode. Consequently, a fast clock signal is not used so as to reduce power consumption in CCD 12 to 15 and their peripheral circuits. The reading operation of the image signal from the fast memory 42 is controlled by a second driving frequency f2 corresponding to a high definition mode.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
