PRODUCTION OF MESOPHASE PITCH FOR PRODUCTION OF CARBON FIBER HAVING HIGH STRENGTH AND ULTRA-HIGH MODULUS AND CARBON-CARBON COMPOSITE MATERIAL USING HIGHLY HEAT-STABLE B COMPONENT AND HIGHLY HEAT-STABLE Q.S. COMPONENT
PURPOSE: To produce a mesophase pitch having extremely excellent physical properties and useful for the production of a carbon filament having high strength and ultra-high modulus and stable physical properties and for the production of a matrix for a carbon- carbon composite material. ;CONSTITUTION: A petroleum pitch produced as a by-product of the thermal catalytic cracking of a desulfurized vacuum gas oil is distilled under reduced pressure and the obtained 460-560°C fraction is extracted with a 6-8C aliphatic hydrocarbon. The insoluble material is extracted with a 6-8C aromatic hydrocarbon to obtain a B. component. The B. component is heated at 400-700°C for 30min to 6hr in an inert gas flow or cracked gas flow under 10-300kg/cm2 pressure. The obtained baked pitch is extracted with an aromatic hydrocarbon to obtain a B. component having extremely high stability to heat. The insoluble component is extracted with quinoline, etc., to obtain a Q.S. component having extremely high heat stability. The B. component or its mixture with the Q.S. component is heat-treated to get a pitch containing 10-30% mesophase pitch. The pitch is aged by heating at 300-360°C for 10-30hr to obtain a pitch having a mesophase pitch content of ≥98%.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
