S-organic Au cpds. (I), which contain 60-90 wt.% Au, have an Au:S atomic ratio greater than 0.71 to 4 and are prepd. by the following method, are new. (I) are prepd. by (a) dissolving a mono-Au(I)-dimercapto-carboxylic acid cpd. of formula HS-Q(COOH)(Y)-S Au (II) or its salt in water in the presence of a base; (b) adding a mineral acid until the pH is at most 2; and (c) isolating the prod. pptd. In (II), Q = an aliphatic 2-4C-alkan-tetra-yl or 5-6-membered cycloaliphatic tetra-yl gp., opt. with an O or imine ring member; Y = H or COOH; the S atoms are on adjacent C atoms.
