PURPOSE: To form a composite material desirable for forming a highly lubricating coating on a substrate such as a metal and to form a coating thereof. ;CONSTITUTION: There is provided a composite material comprising a matrix including chromium carbide particles, and a solid lubricant mixed with the matrix and including barium fluoride and calcium fluoride. This material is spray-deposited onto a substrate using a high-velocity oxy-fuel spray coating technique to form a composite material coating. Desirably, the matrix contains about 20 wt.% metallic binder, the matrix contains particles adjusted to about -325 mesh, the calcium fluoride amounts to about 68 wt.% of the total weight of the solid lubricant, the barium fluoride constitutes about 32 wt.% of the total weight of the solid lubricant, the solid lubricant is an eutectic composition, the solid lubricant has particles adjusted to about -170 to +400 mesh, and the solid lubricant amounts to about 4-15 wt.%, based on the total weight of the composite material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
