PURPOSE: To form a Bragg diffraction grating on an optical fiber or the like by irradiating an optical transmission body with chemical rays polarized for more than a specified ratio in a polarization direction parallel to a plane including a propagation axis at the time of irradiating the optical transmission body provided with an optical propagation axis with the chemical rays. ;CONSTITUTION: In this method for selectively changing the refractive index of the transmission body, at the time of irradiating the optical transmission body 20 provided with the optical propagation axis with the polarized chemical rays, it is irradiated with the chemical rays polarized for at least 60% in the polarization direction parallel to the plane including the propagation axis. In this case, radiation polarized for 60% is the radiation of the chemical rays for which the 60% of radiation intensity is transmitted by a polarizing filter placed along one axis. Thus, chemical ray irradiation with an interference pattern is formed first, the transmission body 20 is exposed to the interference pattern and the Bragg diffraction grating 10 is formed in the transmission body 20. Thus, even by the chemical ray irradiation with the polarization of the low level of about 60%, an article provided with the refractive index disturbance pattern of the Bragg diffraction grating or the like isotropic to the optical fiber or the like is formed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
