PURPOSE:To efficiently, industrially and inexpensively obtain fullerene by vacuum-distilling the petroleum pitch by-produced in thermal catalytic cracking of a vacuum-desulfurized light oil, extracting the fraction with aliphatic hydrocarbons and heat-treating the extract in specified two stages. CONSTITUTION:The petroleum pitch by-produced in the thermal catalytic cracking of a vacuum-desulfurized light oil is vacuum-distilled to obtain a 460-560 deg.C fraction. The fraction is then extracted with a 6-8C hydrocarbon to obtain the extract. The extract is then heated to 300-600 deg.C in an inert gas current at 20-400kg/cm2 for 1-10hr and previously heat-treated for 1-10 hr, and a baked pitch consisting essentially of one benzene and one naphthalene nucleus, having a lower alkyl side chain and contg. a heat-stable component is obtained in 75-85% yield. The baked pitch is then heated at 600-1200 deg.C at 50-600kg/cm2 for 2-20hr to obtain a baked pitch contg. 4-20% fullerene. The fullerene is then extracted with solvent, sublimed in high-temp. vacuum and purified.
